Raise your hand if you’ve ever heard the phrase, “Sleep tight! Don’t let the bed bugs bite!” What once started out as a cute little parting rhyme now strikes actual fear into many people. Bed bugs have become a surprisingly large issue in the last decade. What once was a pest that was thought to be a result of overcrowding and poor hygiene has come back with a vengeance and can strike anyone– no matter how clean or how hygienic! The simplest way to deal with bed bugs is to avoid getting them in the first place, but is bed bug prevention really possible? Yes!
First, you need to prevent bed bugs from entering your home. For frequent travelers, this means taking extra precautions to not bring any of these tiny hitchhikers home with you. Bed bugs thrive in many hotels, so be sure to check carefully any mattress or box spring that you sleep on, especially near the frame of the bed. You’ll be looking for very small, brown dots. Additionally, if you notice any clusters of bites resembling mosquito bites on your skin, notify the management of the hotel at once.
Once you arrive at home, there are steps you can take to ensure that bed bugs aren’t given a ride right to your bedroom. Unpack your suitcase in the garage or outside your home and put your clothes straight into the washer. After that, encase your suitcase in a large garbage bag for a couple of weeks.
Finally, be cautious of used or second-hand furniture, as bed bugs aren’t looking necessarily for beds, but rather easy access to people. If you have taken the necessary precautions and still find yourself a host to bed bugs, don’t despair. These highly transmittable little critters ill sometimes still find their way in, despite your best efforts. An experienced professional can help you rid your home of these critters.
